Ibuprofen Drug - Possible Side Effects and Associated Risks

What is Ibuprofen?
Ibuprofen is a Non steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAIDs) used for relieving various medical conditions. FDA has also approved it and now it is commonly used to treat various types of arthritis, menstrual pains, fever and toothaches. It is also used as an analgesic to relieve pain without causing loss of consciousness. This medication blocks prostaglandins substances released from the body in response to injury and illness. It starts working after the dose is taken and its anti – inflammatory effects take quite a long time. There are different versions and this drug comes in the form of capsules and oral tablet.

How does Ibuprofen Works?
Ibuprofen reduces hormones in the body that causes inflammation. Brain releases prostaglandins that cause swelling and pain. Many times it causes fever. Ibuprofen blocks these hormones. You get immediate relief after taking the pill but the anti – inflammatory effect of this drug takes a long time to be understood.

Recommended Dosage
For adult patients of Osteoarthritis it is recommended to take 400 to 800 mg after every 6 to 8 hours.
 For fever and pain in an adult it is recommended to take 200 to 400 mg after every 4 to 6 hours. 
It is good to take with meals to prevent possible side effects. Overdose of ibuprofen kills so it is important to be careful enough and in case of emergency a physician's advice is required.
There are certain symptoms of overdosing such as:
  • Slow breath
  • Lips, mouth and nose turns blue
  • Dizziness
  • Uncontrolled movements of eyes
Final Words
FDA has approved Ibuprofen and it has been used to treat pain after an injury. This medication can also be given to children over the age of 3 months for controlling fever, pain relief as well as inflammation. People suffering from heart diseases must consult a doctor before taking it. Over dose can be fatal and peoples having some medical complications such as kidney problems, hypertension, angina, asthma, mild heart failure as well as narrowing of the arteries. Though it takes a little time to kick in anti – inflammatory effects but still it is recommended to treat the above physical disorder.
